DEATH SHANTY AUDIO

Studio

Founded in 2024.
Over 15 Years of Experience.

Turn Noise into Music

...or keep the noise! Whether you want to bring your production to the next level or you need a place to record, produce, mix or master your music, Death Shanty Audio, located in the heart of Hamburg is the right choice for you.

The studio is wired for every aspect of modern music and audio production, from writing & recording to editing & mixing.

Record

Record guitar, bass, vocals, synthesizers, drum machines, etc through an SSL interface. Run multiple instruments at the same time, record them separately or together to capture the sound that is haunting you.

Mix

High quality mixing is the key to a professional sounding production. Get your mix to the professional level with room aligned Neumann KH80 DSP monitors powered by a Neumann KH750 Sub and acoustically treated room.

Re-synth

Similar to re-amping a DI signal through an actual guitar or bass amp, DSA offers re-synthing, taking a MIDI signal and running it through a synthesizer. Our collection of analog, digital and modular synthesizers is constantly growing, giving you an endless palette of sounds to choose from.

Sound Design

Having a vast collection of software and hardware synthesizers, drum machines, effects, samplers and euro racks, I can create custom sounds for your production. Whether you need a specific sound for a song, a sound effect for a movie or a sound bed for a podcast, I'd be happy to help you out.

Transfer to Tape

Run your digital audio to tape to add warmth, punch and some analog grit. This can be done for the entire mix, stems or individual tracks. Our tape machine of choice is a refitted 1/4" AKAI GX-221D, using professional RTM LPR 35 tape for crisp analog sound.

How long does a mix take?

The time it takes to mix a song depends on the complexity of the song and the quality of the recordings. A simple song with a few tracks can be mixed within two days after agreement. A more complex song with many tracks and instruments can take a few days. I'll give you an estimate after I've listened to your song and we've discussed your vision for the mix.

How long does it take to transfer tracks to tape?

Depending on the number of tracks and the length of the song, it can take between a day and two.

How much does sound design cost?

This greatly depends on your project, vision and the amount of work that needs to be done. Send me a request and we'll discuss your project and pricing point individually.

Do you offer editing and mixing of podcasts?

Yes, I do. I can edit and mix your podcast. Send me a request and we'll discuss a package price.

Can I record my podcast at Death Shanty Audio?

Yes, you can. DSA offers a vocal booth that is acoustically treated and isolated from the control room. If you are more than two people we can figure out a layout that works for you. Send me a request and I'll get back to you with a concept and price.

Can you record drums?

DSA doesn't have a live room, so there is no way to record acoustic drums in the studio. But you have access to quite a few virtual drum kits and drum machines. Using a good E-Drum kit, you'll get professional and real sounding drums that still retains the feel and accents of your drumming.

Can I record guitar and bass through amps?

Yes, you can. DSA has a variety of guitar and bass amps that you can use to record your guitar and bass with. Since there is no live room we use a Two Notes Torpedo Captor X to record the amps. This way you can get the sound of a cranked amp without the loud volume and choose from a variety of pre-captured cabinets and microphones.

Can I record vocals?

Yes, DSA offers a vocal booth that is acoustically treated and isolated from the control room. You can record your vocals in a quiet and comfortable environment.

How can I rent the studio for my own use?

Renting the studio is no problem. Just fill out the request form and tick the "Rent The Studio" box. For insurance and security reasons, you'll need to deposit your ID or passport during the time you're using the studio and we'll sign a rental agreement. You'll get a briefing on how the studio is set up and how to use it. Any damage to or loss of studio equipment will be charged to you.

Do you offer Mastering?

While mastering isn't my main focus, I can offer you a basic mastering service. I'll make sure your songs are loud and have a consistent volume level. If you need a more detailed mastering service, I can recommend you some mastering engineers. Send a request and we'll discuss your project and pricing point.
